Welcome back to another session of avatar 101!

Our character in the spotlight is Toph Bei Fong, usually referred to as Toph. Toph is known to be an earthbending master. Blind since birth, Toph is constantly looked down upon because of her disability. However, she has never allowed the inconsistency of her disability stop her from being the greatest earth bender she is. Discovering badgermoles, earth-dwelling animals who were blind just like her, she learned seismic sense through them - the ability to use earthbending as an extension of her senses. She sees by feeling the movements in the ground.

Toph is known as the "Blind Bandit", which she debuts in Book 2: Earth (season 2). She developed a tomboyish attitude, let is a smartass as her attitude proclaims. Throughout the series, she also develops metal-bending which she created. She comes from a rich family. Similar to Sam Manson from Danny Phantom. Both characters do not allow wealth to interferer with what they ultimately want.

When Toph joins the avatar group her personality sometimes causes tension between characters. There are quite a few episodes where she and Katara sometimes clash with each other. It could be hinted that she has a disliking for Katara but it is unknown if this is true. Both benders have great skills in their abilities, but it has not been confirmed who is the stronger one. Katara's Waterbending has the ability to kill as demonstrated as she learned how to blood-bend.

Toph also has an excellent sense of hearing. she can recognize pretty much anyone's voice through the series as demonstrated in a few episodes. Notable the segments when the sandbenders steal Appa.She never forgets a voice. This could a result of her hearing being much more acute due to her disability. Another trait she has is she can tell if someone is lying to her or not. She claims that when someone lies, she can sense the vibrations of their heartbeat and breathing patterns. Her accusations are sometimes incorrect. This is demonstrated on Azula as Toph admits Azula is a pretty good liar. Azula can lie to people without changing her physical reaction. Not many people have the ability to lie while manipulating their breathing and pulse.

Toph's character was originally going to be a male. The character Sud, used in the opening credits was going to be the original Toph but changed into a little girl. that possess strength beyond measures in earthbending. Toph is a pretty popular character due to her strength level and attitude. She and Katara are totally opposite form each other. Katara is labelled as the "sugar-queen" as Toph is labelled as "rude and obnoxious".
