Description

Katara is one of the best known female warriors within the Avatar franchise. She is a powerful female Waterbender. She was born in the Southern Water Tribe raised alongside her older brother Sokka by her grandmother Kanna, Unfortunately her mother was killed during a Fire Nation Raid when she was a child. Katara is the last Waterbender in her tribe, until she encounters Hama who dwells as a Fire Nation resident amongst the villagers. Her abilities as a Waterbender are very limited until she under goes training at the North Pole, and completely masters the element. Katara's ability as a warrior gains a power boost when she under goes the "Blood Bending" method created by Hama. Thus, with such a power at her disposal, Katara can control the insides of a person whenever she's filled with rage or the moon is full.

Katara is always portrayed as the "motherly" member of the group always making sure Aang, Toph, and her brother fulfill their duties as well as staying out of trouble. Because of her Kya's death (her mother), this had a tremendous impact in her life and personality, shaping her into the person she is now. Katara is caring and compassionate and is often marked by a fierce determination to aid others. This is demonstrated in Book 3: Fire episode 43/61 The Painted Lady. With her impatient brother trying to get her to leave the helpless villagers alone, she refuses to leave them in the crtical state they're in and at all costs tries to do as much as she can to help.

Even though Katara is a compassionate person, kind, and self-righteous, she can be an air head at times. Katara's jealousy and short tempered attitude is best illustrated with the blind and rebellious Toph. Katara's Waterbending becomes even more advanced and destructive to much higher levels in the third season. Her abilities have advanced at such a high level she's able to manipulate her sweat in the same way she controls water. Not only can she control her sweat but she can also her her powers to heal poeple damaged during battle. Her true challenge is fought when she is faced with the task to go up against Azula during her tag-team match-up with Zuko. Throughout all her training and the new abilities she's gained during all 3 seasons, her Waterbending is still no where near as powerful as Azula's control over fire but she proves to be a formidable opponent, even against master benders such as Azula. Not even the Avatar himself was a match for Azula.
